Crazy Action Contraptions - Ziplining!!!

Students set up a zip line and using lego pieces to glide down the zip line.  It was fun to watch them experiment with the different lego pieces and weights of the runners.

New construction of Tennessee Time Killer.   Students assembled gears and weighted legos (with some Minty Dental Floss) to mimic the mechanism of a clock:

The building continues..

Daniel joined us today and he is proud of the Beaker Blender that he constructed:

Crazy Action Contraptions Day 2

GEARS, GEARS, GEARS!  We learned about gears and the mechanical advantage that they give human beings to open locks and ride bikes.

Day 5

Good morning, campers! How do you like the new blog design? Even though I'm not at J-Rock today, I have confidence that you will do a great job designing your objects for Marcel the Shell! Continue to work in the same groups as Thursday, making sure that your object is appropriately sized for a 15mm tall Marcel. Don't forget to look at your design from different angles to make sure everything is lined up properly. Zoom in, zoom out, rotate and pan in TinkerCAD!

Each of you should spend at least 10 minutes writing your reflections in your Google Doc. There is a link towards the top of this blog that says "Student Handouts." Find the link with your initials and scroll down to the last page in the Google Doc to reflect on this past week's unit on 3D Design and Printing. Include a screenshot of the progress you made with your design for Marcel. I can't wait to see what you accomplish today!

P.S. Please thank Mr. K. for working with you today. Have a great weekend and enjoy next week's Lego unit with Ms. Ellen!

Day 4 Recap

Sadly, today was our last day with the FlashForge Finder 3D printers. A few of us were able to print out our personalized keychains. The Minecraft party glasses were too big for the Finder's build size, so we opted to print a keychain instead.

We also re-watched the Marcel the Shell videos and paused it when we saw familiar, everyday objects to compare his height. Our best guess is that Marcel is somewhere between 15-18mm tall. This helped us to determine how big our designs should be. Most campers paired up to design something that would be useful and helpful to Marcel. We designed a couple of houses, a bicycle, and a car. Unfortunately, TinkerCAD had some hiccups and a few people lost their designs and had to start over again. This didn't dampen our spirits, though! We started over and tried again and will continue tomorrow with our designs for Marcel. Hopefully we can get the printers back later in camp and print out our creations for Marcel.

Some of the challenges campers noted were:

  • TinkerCAD glitching and losing work
  • Moving objects up and down on the workplane - this required lots of precision!
  • Duplicating objects - being aware that the duplicate was right on top of the original
  • Navigating and getting just the right view is tricky!

We were all in agreement, though - 3D Design is lots of fun and we wish we had more time!

Day 2 Recap

Our new campers familiarized themselves with the TinkerCAD environment by completing the scavenger hunt. Our returning friends from Day 1 got to go through the TinkerCAD beginning tutorials. Some of us found the tutorials a little tedious, but they were excited to print one of the objects they customized! Two friends printed personalized keychains, and one camper designed his own MineCraft party glasses with the help of the tutorials (this will be printed tomorrow morning since it's an hour-long print job). I can't wait to see what we get done tomorrow!

Day 2

Today we welcomed four new campers! They will work on the Scavenger Hunt.

TCM Student Handout Day 1
FH Student Handout Day 1
EM Student Handout Day 1
DM Student Handout Day 1

Our three returning campers from Day 1 will be going through the TinkerCAD tutorials to learn how to start designing on their own. We watched two silly and goofy videos about Marcel the Shell. We guessed about how big Marcel is based on some of the everyday objects in the video. The campers are starting to think of objects they can design to help Marcel in his day-to-day life!

Day 1 Recap

Our first day was a success! Despite some (okay, one) of us staying up too late last night playing video games, our campers got a quick intro on 3D printers and spent time getting to know TinkerCad. The campers went on a TinkerCad scavenger hunt, and in the process, learned how to:

  • Take a screenshot on a Mac
  • How to Zoom In in TinkerCad
  • Orbit around an object in TinkerCad
  • Pan across in TinkerCad
  • Use the Focus tool to get the right perspective on a specific object
Check out how many objects our campers found today! They did a great job and learned VERY quickly!

STEAM Major, Day 1

Welcome to Day 1 of the STEAM major at Cornerstone's J-Rock summer camp! This week, we will be learning about 3D design and printing.

What is 3D printing? Let's take a look at this time-lapse video of a FlashForge Finder printing a 3D selfie (this is the type of printer we'll have at J-Rock this week).

Let's get started by learning how to design in TinkerCad. Each group should make a copy of today's handout:
